Agriculture is rightly seen as a key sector in the grand transformation towards sustainable development with its three dimensions: economic and social development and environmental protection. It also plays a pertinent role in the area of food security. In a globalized world, trade, trade policy and the international economic law and human right are of critical importance in this regard. By studying and discussing the complex interplay between international economic law, EU trade policy and sustainable agriculture, this seminar aims to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the legal frameworks governing the global trade system, EU trade policy, human rights and sustainable development. This involves a variety of issues and potential seminar topics such as: • the human right to food and the rights of peasants and indigenous peoples, • the rules on trade in agriculture of the World Trade Organization: market access, subsidies and sanitary and phytosanitary standards, • relevant parts of EU free trade agreements, • geographical indications as a means to promote regional development of agriculture and food productions, • agriculture and deforestation in international trade: the EU Deforestation Regulation, • the significance of the proposed EU Directive on Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence, • trade and agriculture in times of armed conflict. Participation requires basic knowledges of public law, EU law, international law, economic or environmental law and some English language skills. Successful participants will also be af- forded a language certificate (Sprachenschein). It is intended that the oral part of the seminar will take place in Brussels in June or July, jointly with a seminar organized by Prof. Dr. José Martinez on EU Agricultural Law on a date to be announced in due course. We are currently seeking funds to offer financial support. In any case, online participation will be made available. Participation in the seminar requires The seminar (limit: 10 students) will be conducted in English and is open to law students of specialization areas (Schwerpunktbereiche) 2, 4, 5 and 9 (vorbereitende Leistung/ Semina- rarbeit/ Studienarbeit), for Erasmus exchange and master students of related programs, includ- ing those of other Faculties. - an application by mail to be sent to intecolaw@jura.uni-goettingen.de before introductory meetings, indicating (1) the name, (2) mail-address, (3) the type of examination (vorberei- tende Leistung/Seminararbeit/Studienarbeit/Erasmus), (4) the level of legal and language skills, (5) a short cv and (6) a short letter of motivation, - participation in one of the introductory meetings.
