Comment/Description

This is an introductory course on British Landeskunde (life, culture and institutions). On the course, I want to try to do two things with you: 1. Talk about what kind of country the UK is; e.g. history, geography, and politics, etc. 2. Discuss and practice how everyday life works in the UK. Recommended course books are: James O'Driscoll: Britain, The Country and its People - An Introduction for Learners of English, Oxford University Press (+ the workbook if you can get it) and Fox, Kate: Watching the English, The Hidden Rules of English Behaviour, Hodder, London (any edition). You do not need to buy the books to complete the course. You will be asked to give a presentation (probably in a group) on a subject of your choice. Subjects include: geography, education, political system, British English (language), sport, social life, dos and don"ts, etc. but there will hopefully also be room for your own suggestions. I hope you enjoy it!

The course is part of admission "Sprachpraxis - Creative Writing + Intro Culture".
If you are enrolled for one of the minors/module packages offered by the SEP and cannot register for one of the courses in this section, please contact Dr. Reitemeier for assistance.
