Kommentar/Beschreibung

This class will focus on hardboiled detective fiction starting with the classics of the genre and extending through mid- to late-20th-century examples. Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler helped create the hardboiled detective by adapting the frontiersman to an urban setting. Their heroes break the law in order to preserve the law, displaying a propensity towards violence that is hardly distinguishable from that of the criminals they fight. Hardboiled detectives wield violence to uphold the civilized rules of society—but also the unwritten rules of gender and race that form the shadow side of (il)legality. It is these rules that later authors challenge by changing the gender, ethnicity, and behavior of their detectives. We will explore these issues through the close reading of primary texts. We will also discuss what makes a literary genre generic.

Registration: Attendance for this class is limited to 25 students. Binding (!) registration on Stud.IP between 01 March and 31 March 2024 is required. All news concerning this class will be posted on Stud.IP as well. The class will start in the first week of the semester. For final registration, participants need to attend the first session of class.
