Kommentar/Beschreibung

Totalitarianism may lurk in our imagination as a spectre of the past, but we still see highly repressive authoritarian regimes in all regions of the world. Perhaps most dicussed amongthese, the People's Republic ofChina relies heavily on supposedly ‘totalitarian’ measures to suppress itspopulation and strengthen itsregime. But to what extent is the analytical concept of totalitarianism, which political science developed inthe last century, still useful for such modern regimes?

In this seminar, we will first look at historically significant works that have contributed to the analytical identification of totalitarianism (e.g. Arendt, Friedrich and Brzezinski, Linz). This will enable us to familiarise ourselves with central concepts and define the term. We then look on the one handat the cultural reception and reappraisal of totalitarianism through literature and academic contributions. To do this, students must have personally acquired a novel and finishedit by the end of the Christmas holidays. On the other hand, we will look at currentauthoritarian regimes that have totalitarian elements and try to apply ourconcepts and understandings of thispolitical theory to modern-day examples.

The seminar is conceptualised with a focus onreading and discussion, all of which will take place in English. Approximately 30-40 pages of reading are expected per week, plus the novel (between 150 and 350 pages) over the first half of the semester. Due to the additional reading effort, a high level of motivation is desiredfrom participants.The compulsory presentation will take place in a synchronous poster session in the new year.

  • Es wird eine festgelegte Anzahl von Plätzen in den Veranstaltungen verteilt.
    Die Plätze in den betreffenden Veranstaltungen wurden am 13.10.2024 um 23:59 verteilt. Weitere Plätze werden evtl. über Wartelisten zur Verfügung gestellt.
  • Die Anmeldung ist möglich von 23.09.2024, 09:00 bis 01.11.2024, 18:00.
  • Die Anmeldung ist nur für Teilnehmende mindestens einer der folgenden Veranstaltungen erlaubt:
    • 865972 Politiktheoretische Kontroversen (WiSe 2024/25)
  • Die Anmeldung zu maximal 1 Veranstaltungen des Anmeldesets ist erlaubt.
