B.MM.011 – Basics of neurodegenerative diseases

Beschreibung: Course objectives:
1) Theoretical part: molecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases (risk factors, mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease; Parkinson's disease, etc.); clinical and laboratory diagnostics; therapeutic approaches.
2) Practical part: learning relevant methods used in dementia diagnostics, e.g. PCR, gene sequencing, in situ hybridization, and protein aggregation assay (RT-QuIC).
Course structure of the theoretical part:
1. general CSF diagnostics and diagnostics of dementias (sporadic and familial)
2. introduction to the molecular mechanisms and diagnostics of prion diseases
3. introduction to the molecular mechanisms and diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease
4. introduction to the basic methods for determining diagnostic markers (gene sequencing, PCR, RT-QuIC, MRZ-ELISA)
5. dementia - syndrome of numerous diseases (overview)
6. risk factors of neurodegenerative diseases
7. subjective memory impairment, mild cognitive impairment
8. vascular dementias
9. molecular mechanisms of other neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson's disease; ALS, Huntington's disease...
10. other causes of dementia, including MS; Pick's disease, trauma...
11. therapy of neurodegenerative diseases
12. evaluation of scientific evidence based on clinical studies
Practical part in small groups:
Performance of the following laboratory methods under supervision:
(a) RT-QuIC for the diagnosis of sporadic prion diseases.
b) Sequence PCR and gene sequencing for the diagnosis of familial dementias
c) Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) genotype determination by in-situ hybridization (risk factor in Alzheimer's disease)
