Description:

The core idea behind Emergent Grammar is to explain natural language from general cognitive capacities and from speaker/hearer interaction. In this course, we introduce and discuss the major tenets of emergentism and look into consequences of this theory for modeling language change. For most of the course, we will concentrate on phonology since this is an area where non-linguistic factors are most easily identified. Topics will be the role of feature and constraint acquisition and gradual representations in phonological change. In the last sessions, we will look into emergentist approaches to grammaticalization.
