| Description: |
| This course offers an introduction to the intonational phonology based on the auto-segmental metrical phonological framework. The theoretical background and the techniques of prosodic annotation will be introduced with examples from familiar languages (English, German). Based on this background, we will examine the current knowledge about the prosodic diversity of the world’s languages. How do languages without pitch accents (like French, Korean, Turkish) express the several discourse concepts with demarcating the phonological entities with edge events? Do tonal languages such as Chinese or Yucatec Maya use intonational means in order to express speech act (e.g., questions) or information structure (e.g., focus)? The course participants will be offered the opportunity to create their own projects, based on corpora of spoken data. |
