Comment/Description

This course offers an intriguing comparative journey intothe biographical andhagiographical traditions in Late Antiquity (circa III-V centuries AD) within both pagan Neoplatonism and Christianity. We will examine how the concept of the pagan "philosopher" gradually evolved to resemble that of a savior and a "holy man," in dialogue with the contemporaneous portrayals of saints in Christian hagiography. Selected passages from the biographies of philosophers (such as Pythagoras, Plato,Apollonius, Plotinus, Iamblichus, Proclus, and Isidorus) will be juxtaposed with those from the lives of Christian saints and theologians (including Origen, Anthony, Historia Monachorum, and Severus of Antioch). We will thus embark on a captivating exploration of Late Antiquity and discover how philosophy and religionevolved in tandem, engaging in a complex interplay of influences, rejections, and adaptations toshape a transformative era.
