Comment/Description

Summer semester 2025: 8 nights between 10 March and 14 July
led by Johannes Kamp, Department of Conservation Biology, Uni Göttingen
20 Participants (10 students BSc Biologische Diversität and Ökologie, 10 students MSc Biodiversity, Ecology, Evolution and Conservation)

Background and aims: Moths are a diverse group, but many species are comparatively easy to identify in the field. They are also good indicators for the conservation status of a range of habitats, which makes them important in applied conservation science.
After completion of this course, participants will be able to identify a large range of moths and many micromoths. They will also have an overview of the ecology and natural history of moths.

Course schedule: Fieldwork will be conducted during eight nights in the second week of March, the first and last week of April, the first half of May, and in June and July. We depend on good weather; therefore, the course dates will be announced 3-4 days in advance. We will, in small groups, attract moths with LED lamps and wine roping.
Course requirements: Students will work in groups of five. Each group will need to write a final short report and to upload photographs and data on all identified species onto a citizen science platform. Equipment will be provided. Each student needs to attend at least 5 out of the 8 nights.
