Comment/Description

In this entry level course, we will look at how open source microcontrollers can be used to control various aspects of biological experiments with an emphasis on neuroscience. The overarching motivation for this is that often during the course of a scientific project the need arises for custom built experimental hardware or to integrate new equipment into existing setups in order to adapt your setup to specific needs. Commercial systems often lag the flexibility that one needs, are difficult to interface with new instruments, and usually are quite expensive. To overcome these obstacles, many labs started to develop their own hard- and software components, which are often shared with the scientific community. Designed by the scientists using them, these open-source tools are elegantly simple, require few electronic components, offer a high degree of flexibility but remain affordable.

The course is aimed at students interested in exploring how microcontrollers might be useful in their own experiments or to better understand how much of scientific equipment is working under the hood but did not yet explore microcontrollers towards these aims.

During the course we will first introduce open-source microcontrollers (i.e. Arduinos) as well as accompanying programming tools. Further, we will explore some basic electronic components and sensors. We will also discuss how to interface custom built equipment with PCs and how to interface various external hardware components with microcontrollers. With this knowledge gathered, participants will finally build their own hard- and software towards performing a small experiment.

Important:

Once participation has become binding after the signing-out period, cancellation is only possible via the GGNB or GAUSS Office with a) sick certificate, or b) statement by supervisor for scientific reasons. If you do not provide this, you will be excluded from courses for the next 12 months, as well as travel grants and other financial support. No exceptions.

By signing up you agree (1) to carefully check whether you will be able to attend the course (do not register for 2 courses taking place on the same dates - the above mentioned sanctions apply!), (2) to frequently check your student e-mail account, as all information on courses will exclusively be sent to that account; (3) that your name and e-mail address may be forwarded to the course instructor(s) for communication before and after the course; (4) to complete the course evaluation; (5) inform us if you no longer wish to maintain a waiting list position; (6) that you only receive credits for attending the entire workshop - you will not get partial credits for part-time attendance.

Admission settings

The course is part of admission "GGNB_Methods_2024_SoSe_Februar_April".
You can register and sign out for methods courses in April 2024 from 1-20 February 2024. The slots will be assigned around 25 February 2024.
In exceptional circumstances, you can still sign out until 29 February 2024.
Your participation becomes binding on 1 March 2024. Thereafter, cancellation is only possible via the GGNB Office with a) sick certificate, or b) statement by supervisor (for scientific reasons). If you do not provide this, you will be excluded from courses for the next 12 months, as well as travel grants and other financial support.
