Comment/Description

This combined lecture and complementary exercises offer the possibility to strengthen the knowledge in statistical mechanics, both on a conceptual level as well as in terms of advanced mathematical methods.

This advanced course will start by recapitulating fundamental concepts of Hamiltonian dynamics, and derive from these, i.e. from first principles, effective stochastic dynamics as internally consistent theory of modern theory of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, by joining the different approaches by Mori and Zwanzig on the one hand, and the "stochastic Liouvillean" by Kubo on the other hand, stochastic Ito calculus, stochastic path integrals, and the framework of both, Markovian as well as non-Markovian, Fokker-Planck-type evolution equations. Concurrently, the lectures will review the basic principles of equilibrium and non-equilibrium statistical mechanics and the framework of stochastic thermodynamics, with no particular preference on the subfield of physics (biophysics, soft matter, condensed matter, etc.).

The following topics will be covered: Introduction to Gibbs"s statistical mechanics, Mori-Zwanzig projection operator methods, stochastic Liouville theory, Ito calculus, stochastic path integrals, adiabatic elimination of fast degrees of freedom in the Fokker-Planck equation and beyond, stochastic thermodynamics.

This weekly course (lecture plus complementary exercises) takes place at the:

Seminar room E37, Department of Theoretical and Computational Biophysics (Tower 6), MPI-NAT, Fassberg Campus, Am Fassberg 11, 37077 Goettingen.

A preparatory meeting will take place prior to the course.

Admission settings

The course is part of admission "GGNB_Methods_2024_WiSe_August_Oktober".
You can register and sign out for methods courses in October 2024 from 1-20 August 2024. The slots will be assigned around 25 August 2024.
In exceptional circumstances, you can still sign out until 31 August 2024.
Your participation becomes binding on 1 September 2024. Thereafter, cancellation is only possible via the GGNB Office with a) sick certificate, or b) statement by supervisor (for scientific reasons). If you do not provide this, you will be excluded from courses for the next 12 months, as well as travel grants and other financial support.

By signing up you agree (1) to carefully check whether you will be able to attend the course (do not register for 2 courses taking place on the same dates – the above mentioned sanctions apply!), (2) to frequently check your student e-mail account, as all information on courses will exclusively be sent to that account; (3) that your name and e-mail address may be forwarded to the course instructor(s) for communication before and after the course; (4) to complete the course evaluation; (5) inform us if you no longer wish to maintain a waiting list position; (6) that you only receive credits for attending the entire workshop - you will not get partial credits for part-time attendance.
The following rules apply for the admission:
  • A defined number of seats will be assigned to these courses.
The seats in the affected courses have been assigned at 25.08.2024 on 23:59. Additional seats may be available via a wait list.
